Anxiety & Panic Attacks
Anxiety management and panic attacks
Anxiety or stress is a natural occurrence where the body releases extra adrenaline in order to prepare your body to protect yourself from a perceived threat. This is called the flight or fright response and the physical symptons of the excessive adrenaline are;
- Increase in heart rate
- Increase in breathing rate
- Sympathetic nervous system becomes overactive
- Muscles become tense
- Blood is diverted to the muscles in the arms and legs
- Digestion system slows down
This is an ancient response and would have been a very useful protection had you been confronted by a bear or a tiger as your body would have been in a high alert state with extra energy where needed to attack, or to run.
Unfortunately, the biochemicals that help you run away and fight, also end up damaging your immune system if they’re left active for a prolonged period of time. If you don’t get a chance to take your system off a high alert status, the effects of your fight or flight response can cause physical damage; an overactive sympathetic nervous system can case your body to shake, an increased heart rate wears down your heart muscle, increased breathing may end up as hyperventilation, which in turn can lead to panic attacks, muscle tension can cause tension headaches and muscle pain and decreased digestion can result in a number of problems associated with the gut.
You don’t meet many bears today but you do have bosses, threatening bullies, financial concerns and so on which are the modern day equivalents – however in today’s society you do very little fighting or fleeing in response to your anxieties, infact, all we tend to do is let our feelings grow and grow.
Today we don’t actively fight, and we don’t actively run away – as far as the body is concerned its a bit like having your foot pressed down on the accelerator and the brake at the same time. The result can be breakdown.
